After Taking The Values In Action (Via) Inventory Of...

After taking the Values in Action (VIA) Inventory of Strengths, I realized that some of what I thought were my character strengths actually proved otherwise based on the survey taken. Although I am not surprised that my top character strength is honesty, it was interesting to learn my other top strengths. Taking the Emotional Intelligence (EQ) and Leadership Self-Assessment introduced me to my social and self-intelligence. Using the KAB model, I was able to identify knowledge, attitude and behavior strengths for both self and social intelligence. The Values in Action Inventory of Strengths was designed to classify one’s character strengths and assess the strengths identified utilizing a self-reporting survey, Peterson and Seligman†¦show more content†¦2000). After taking the EQ self-assessment, I was able to identify what my character strengths while also noticing areas that I can improve on to become a more effective teammate and/or leader. The assessment focused on the areas of self-awareness, empathy, self-confidence, motivation, self-control and social competency. Being aware of this is important for self-improvement. A leader should always look for ways to enhance their productivity and relationship with his or her employees and peers alike. The EQ assessment allows for this. The results of my strengths were not surprising. The assessment gave me the understanding that I am very self-aware, empathetic and motivated. It also determined that I could improve on my self-control and social competency. It is necessary for me to focus on this shortfall as it can cause conflict in a team environment. Being that an employer should lead by example, bettering this will become a priority. Working on self-improvement is a strength and is appreciated in any team. It shows knowledge of self and that you hold yourself accountable achieve the team’s goal. Leadership is a process which a person influences and inspires the thoughts, attitudes and beha viors of others by providing purpose, direction and motivation. The Major Conflict In The Novel, Cry The Beloved Country, Is An Inner

The major conflict in the novel, Cry the Beloved Country, is an inner uncertainty within the characters. The author, Alan Paton, shows this inner conflict from two perspectives; the Europeans and the Native South Africans. These two groups also have inconsistencies in their conscious to resolve. The black Natives are struggling between tradition and the new world. The Natives are forfeiting their old values as they progress towards the mode of the big city life. The Europeans are also confused. Many Europeans want to help the Natives, but are faced with following old tradition. Conventionally, these two groups should live independently. The changing of customs and values created apprehension and fear for both groups of people. Steven Kumalo, a Native priest, faced inner conflicts throughout the book. Kumalo had dreams of restoring the tribe and reuniting his family. He received a letter telling him his sister was ill in Johannesburg. Steven overcomes his fears of the big city and attempts to reunite his broken family. Steven hoped to find his sister Gertrude, brother John, and son Absalom. Each of these characters rejected their old values. His brother, John, was a corrupt politician. Kumalo's sister, Gertrude, was a prostitute. Absalom, Stephen's son, killed Arthur Jarvis. Kumalo struggled with feelings about his family members. He continued to encounter the clash of two different worlds affecting their lives. The Europeans were caught between tradition and the modernistic ways. The Europeans had been taught they were a superior race. Many Europeans doubted their traditional views and lifestyles. During the Native's bus boycott, a few Europeans voluntarily drove the Natives so they did not have to walk. The old routine customs were questioned, and challenged. In this case, the rules were ignored. Customs were also ignored during Absalom's trial. Absalom Kumalo, Stephen's son, was found guilty of murdering Arthur Jarvis. Absalom's white friend broke the color line while leaving the courtroom. Carmichael ran to help Stephen who was about to collapse from devastating grief for his son. Helping a friend, rather than obeying tradition was Carmichael's response to this inner conflict. Jarvis and Kumalo began interacting with each other when they returned to Natal. Mr. Jarvis's grandson visited Stephen's home a few times before returning to Johannesburg. Kumalo taught the young boy the Native Zulu language. The boy was a respectful and attentive student. Mr. Jarvis's grandson challenged the old ways and accepted his teacher. It was much easier for the younger generations to accept the challenges of change. The younger generations had different views about racial issues than their parents. Mr. Kumalo hoped the younger generations would prosper and live peacefully. James Jarvis and Stephen Kumalo returned to their homes in Natal. A deadly drought had devastated the land. Mr. Kumalo turned to tradition for an end to the drought. He visited the tribal chief for help. The chief told Kumalo there is nothing to be done and they will pray for rain. Stephen Kumalo and many others viewed the chief as just a figurehead. Kumalo's trip to Johannesburg taught him to accept new ways and ideas. Stephen Kumalo questioned traditional solutions to the current problems in his land. James Jarvis returned to help the Native tribal community. He hired a new teacher for the school. The teacher informed the Natives of new farming methods. The new knowledge helped the natives through the drought. Mr. Jarvis also gave the Natives milk for the young children until they could get enough of their own. He also offered to build Stephen a new church. Jarvis ignored belief and custom to help people in need, regardless of their skin color. Alan Paton's novel presents the personal conflict of Jarvis and Kumalo. Through their lives, the larger conflict between the races in South Africa and for all humanity is presented by this wonderful author.

The right to counsel in Native American tribal courts Essay Congress’s goal with respect to American Indians has always been at cross purposes and requires a delicate balancing act. The drive to preserve Indian heritage and the drive to assimilate or civilize the native American represent the conflicting interests Congress attempts to balance. This most obvious in the area of criminal law where congress has to apply the Federal laws which may often times conflict with tribal laws. Vincent Milani’s article The right to counsel in Native American tribal courts: tribal sovereignty and congressional control provides some valuable insight into the efforts made by congress in reconciling these conflicting interests and their consequences for the enforcement of criminal laws on native American lands. Milani takes a concise look at tribal history and the manner in which the indigenous American native resolved disputes. The author contrasts this approach against the steps taken by Congress to establish a criminal justice system in the United States that is both equitable and respectful of fundamental human rights. Milani also takes the time to demonstrate how preservation of tribal culture and customs together with the right to self-determination have been preserved as well as compromised to assimilate the native Americans within the Federal system of justice. Milani explains the difficulties for Congress in achieving these conflicting goals. The primary problem arises out of age old tribal traditions of resolving their disputes in a manner which is primarily contrary to the Constitutional mandates for a fair and public trial. (Milani, 1994) Milani writes: â€Å"Historically, these methods have varied greatly among the tribes and they have contrasted significantly with the federal judicial system in the United States.† (Milani, 1994) To start with Milani notes that tribal justice involved different cultures with different approaches to conflict management. For instance, tribes were â€Å"governed by tribal councils† or they were â€Å"controlled by military soldier or hunter regimes† who were duty bound to manage conflicts. (Milani, 1994) Other tribes were permitted to allow their â€Å"priests, prophets, religious elders† as well as â€Å"wise men† to act as peace makers. (Milani, 1994) Even family or clan members could resolve disputes and in some circumstances a â€Å"legal authority† comprised of law men could resolve come issues. (Milani, 1994) Milani offers this background information as a means of demonstrating the difficulties for Congress in preserving cultural heritage within the native American lands and reconciling that goal with comity within the Federal system. Complicating matters the Indians did not subscribe to a uniform type of criminal justice until late into the 19th century when the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) founded the Courts of Indian Offences (CFR). (Milani, 1994) The CFR was established in response to the Federal Government’s plans for: â€Å"assimilation, and their purpose was to promote acculturation on the reservations to help ‘civilize’ the Indians.† (Milani, 1994) The problem for law enforcement is in recognizing and respecting the jurisdiction of tribal courts and laws which are distinct from Federal law and outside of its jurisdiction. (Milani, 1994) Making matters worse was the implementation of the Indian Reorganization Act 1934 which represented a â€Å"major shift in Federal policy from assimilation to self-determination.† (Milane, 1994) The result was a placement of more authority in tribal rule and less authority in the BIA and a means by which tribal courts could legitimately replace the CFR system. (Milani, 1994) This is significant since the tribal judiciary are accountable to the tribal courts allowing tribes to establish their own criminal justice system. Milani points out that today Indian reservations contain close to 150 tribal courts as opposed to just 9 CFRs. (Milani, 1994) In understanding and appreciating the limited jurisdiction of law enforcement within native American lands it is necessary to understand the jurisdiction of tribal courts and criminal law. Milani’s explanation is rather insightful and informative. Tribal courts have retained a procedure and practice that essentially mirrors the historic dispute resolution mechanism which distinguishes it from the formalities of the State and Federal system of justice. (Milani, 1994) Moreover, the Federal government indorses this practice by providing for statutory funding of tribal courts under the Indian Tribal Justice Act 1993. (Milani, 1994) In the final analysis, Indians have sustained â€Å"inherent powers of limited sovereignty which has never been extinguished.† (Milani, 1994) By this method of organization the tribal courts exercise jurisdiction â€Å"over crimes committed on tribal lands by one† native over another. (Milani, 1994) However, major crimes fall under Federal laws although the penalties are limited in respect of native American convictions. (Milani, 1994) Be that as it may, the tribal courts will not have jurisdiction over crimes committed in tribal territories by â€Å"non-Indians.† (Milani, 1994) The greatest difficulty for law enforcement is the establishing jurisdiction over crimes allegedly committed in tribal territory. To start with it is necessary to determine whether or not the crime was committed by a non-Indian. This would necessarily involve a taxing background search which would consume time and money. In the end, should the suspect be determined to have been Indian time and money would have been thrown away at great expense to the criminal justice system. In this way, Milani’s article is of great interest to those who advocate against delayed justice. It is therefore entirely unnecessary to permit such disparaging application of criminal laws within a criminal justice jurisdiction. The most viable solution would be the introduction of a blanket jurisdiction as in state and county boundaries. Given Congress’ desire to preserve Indian culture and to implement some measure of criminal accountability it should adapt a different course. For instance, if a crime is committed within tribal jurisdiction, unless it violates Federal law, it should be for the jurisdiction of that tribe whether or not the suspect is Indian. Poor Infection Control This story is about a man in his twenties named Michael Skolnik. He was born in March of 1979 and died in June of 2004. He was the only child of his parents. It all started one day while he was doing normal activity, and he passed out in September of 2001. His parents took him to the hospital and a CT scan showed the slight possibility of a colloid cyst, but whatever the two to three millimeter dot was, it was not symptomatic. His mother consulted with a neurosurgeon who said that it was urgent to place Michael in ICU for observation.The neurosurgeon said that Michael needed to have brain surgery within two days. It was supposed to be a three hour operation, and Michael was only supposed to have to spend six days in the hospital. The neurosurgeon explained to Michael’s mother that he had done many of these procedures before, and that he really didn’t even have to go inside Michael’s brain to remove the cyst. He said that the cyst was there and was blocking the cerebral spinal fluid from flowing. The three hour operation ended up lasting six hours without a cyst ever being found. Meanwhile, heavy manipulation had been done to Michael’s brain.His â€Å"six day hospital stay† became five months in ICU, Twenty-two months in other medical institutions, and the last six months of his life at home, in his parent’s own ICU. Upon the hospital’s further examination of Michael’s CT scan, it became evident that the neurosurgeon’s pressure to rush Michael into surgery was unwarranted. This marked the beginning of a Thirty-two month long nightmare of brain surgeries, infections, pulmonary embolisms, respiratory arrest, vision impairment, paralysis, psychosis, severe seizure disorder, short-term memory loss, multiple organ failure, and near total dependence and disability.Michael could not eat, speak, or move anything but his right hand. These solutions can help to eliminate the gap between the rich and the poor countries. The Individual level is were individuals do things to help eliminate problems that exist. The people are just as responsible as the nation states are. Things that we can do are: 1) Join a student group that creates awareness of these problems, 2) Minimize some of the waste that we create, 3) Sponsor a child in a poor country, 4) Change some laws and 5) Have a meatless day. If you join a group you can become more aware of the problems that exist and then spread this information to others. If we minimize our waste such as eat all the food that we make and not make extra food. This would leave food for people in poorer countries. You could sponsor a child which would give this child food, education and medical attention that he/she needs. There are many organizations that can help you to do this. Some laws that we could change would be allowing regular house hold to have a lamb. This would save on gas because it can mow your lawn for you. It also can act as a fertilizer and is good for the environment. Having a meat less day would save on the consumption of meet, so there would be more meat for the poorer countries. These little things can be a great benefit to the world and help to solve the world problems. The national level is when a nation does something to help solve the world's problems. This would be to solve the nations problems first. If we can solve our own problems then we could start to work and concentrate on the world's problems. There are 38 million people in the United States that are below the poverty level. If these people weren't below the poverty level it would be 38 million less that the world would have to worry about. The same goes for every country, if they could decrease their people below poverty then it's less the world has to worry about. This would help to take care of the gap between poor and wealthy in the individual countries before the world gap

During the post-classical time period, both the Umayyad and Mongol empires rose to the height of their power through many similarities and differences. For example, both dynasties expanded by militaristic advances, but a single man was responsible for the rise of the Mongols and they also supported all faiths unlike the Umayyad. The Mongol founder, Genghis Khan, conquered surrounding nomadic tribes and brought them under his rule through extensive military conquest.Over the entire rise of the Mongols, they gained Asia, Russia, the Middle East and parts of Europe all as territories. In fact, the land Genghis had obtained was so vast that it had to be broken up into to four kingdoms upon his death. To conquer new lands, the Mongols were experts on horseback and were known for their cruel and barbaric torturing rituals, such as â€Å"drawn and quartered. † Similarly, the Umayyad prevailed against people groups from Saudi Arabia all the way West to Morocco in Northern Africa.Unlik e later Islamic dynasties, the Umayyad were mostly concentrated on power and the conquering of land by their brutal military tactics. With their capital at the central location of Damascus, in Syria, they were able to govern and expand their large Islamic kingdom effectively. Overall, both the Mongol and Umayyad empires expanded through military conquest during their rise to power. The Umayyad dynasty was formed from a clan of prominent Meccan merchants in Arabia.From their established reputations and connections throughout the region, they were able to rise to power and stabilize the Islamic community. Unlike the Umayyad, the Mongols rose to power from one man, Temujin, who is better known as Genghis Khan. At the age of twelve he was orphaned and began to form alliances with other boys his age. Then, over time he had his own army that began to conquer nomadic tribes. Little by little, he began to capture what would soon be his entire Mongolian empire. Many times Christians, Jews, Zoroastrians and Buddhists were taxed heavily; this was called jizya.Also, people of different religions could not access wealth and positions of authority in the empire, which created an overall resentment of the Umayyads and a resistance to their rule. The Mongol and the Umayyad empires both had influential effects during the years of 500 to 1000 A. D and rose to power through many similarities and diff erences in their strategies. Overall both empires depended heavily on their military to expand territory, but they differed in the way they treated the conquered people. Both of these played a role in how each came to power, and also the total effect they left on the world.
